What makes a good portrait?

The best Portrait Photographs come from the meeting of a photographer’s expertise with your personality. Whether it’s a corporate portrait, an editorial portrait, an actor’s headshot, family photography, or couples photography; a portrait is always a collaboration.

My portrait sessions are relaxed. I’ll only direct you when it’s appropriate, and always with the goal of helping to bring out the real you in the final result. Over the years I’ve photographed a diverse range of people, and always take time to sense what a person is comfortable with. I want you to feel at ease, so rest assured that your comfort is my highest priority.

I’ll be very happy to talk over the details of our shoot before actually getting started. I can help you decide which clothes to wear, what time to meet, and we can talk about the general look you want to go for. I can also help with locations.

To get started, you can call me (Rob) on 07792250634 or email me at [email protected] or you can use this contact form. I’m in Edinburgh city centre, at 14 Viewforth Square, Edinburgh, EH10 4LW

Portraits for professionals

Professional style portraits are often used as headshots for company websites, for annual reports, LinkedIn profiles, or circulated in some other way. You might have a good idea of how you’d like to look in your professional portrait, but I’m always here to discuss various options with you so we can get the results you need from a good portrait.

Editorial style Portraits

Editorial style portraits can be a lot of fun, and are less formal than professional style shoots. Sometimes I will photograph a person doing something that they’re known for, such as playing an instrument, which brings an extra element of interest to the portrait. In any case, I’m happy to run over any ideas you might have, and to offer some opinions of my own, so that you can get the most from your session.

Families, Couples, Babies, and Pets.

To me, photographs get even better with time, and can be a great souvenir of new love, of family life, or of another special occasion. Whether you’d like an engagement photography session, a family portrait, some pet photography, maternity, newborn or baby session – a portrait session is ideal, and I’ll be happy to hear from you.

If you wanted to have your portrait session outside we could talk about beaches such as Yellowcraigs beach or Portobello beach, or visiting part of Edinburgh Old town such as Edinburgh Castle or The Royal Mile, or somewhere else like Lauriston Castle, Cammo estate, Calton hill, Arthurs seat, or The Meadows to name a few….

FAQ’s

What if I’m nervous?

If you’re going to be in front of the camera, it’s probably not something you do everyday. Feeling nervous is completely normal. But you’ll quickly see that I enjoy meeting new people, and I‘m good at helping them feel at ease. I find that the best pictures come from fun and relaxed shoots, when people can just be themselves. So I always try to bring that atmosphere to the shoot.

Which session should I choose?

The Standard Portrait sessions are usually best for individuals or couples, and for a shoot in one location. I’d choose the Extended Portrait session if there were more people, if you wanted to try different locations or outfits, or if you wanted to have more time to make the most of the session. But if you’re unsure, I’ll be happy to help you decide which session is best.

How do I choose a location?

If you have a location in mind, which may be at home or your place of work, or somewhere else, that’s great. If not, I’ll be happy to discuss that with you. I have some favourite places to go, depending on the weather and time of day, and the style of portrait that you’re after.

What happens at a family or group session?

If your preference is for a more formal Portrait, I’ll direct you, and we can try out different options. But I usually work a bit more spontaneously, allowing you to feel at ease, as I wait for the right moment to take a picture. In any case, I like to keep sessions relaxed and fun.

How should I dress?

Above all else you should feel comfortable. Depending on how you intend to use your portrait, you might want to dress more formally, a little smart, or in everyday clothes. But you can try out a few options, and I’m happy to run over this with you.

What is the maximum number of people persession?

I’m happy to photograph larger groups of people, for a group portrait for example, so there isn’t a maximum number. But of course if we are doing individual portraits, it will take more time if there are more people.

What if I need to reschedule?

If something comes up and you need to reschedule, don’t worry, but please let me know as soon as possible and hopefully we’ll be able to rearrange for a later date.

How many images will I be able to see on my private online gallery?

If you were looking for something like a corporate headshot, I’d usually upload the best 10-20 images, but if you wanted more that’s fine too. For shoots when I’m shooting in a more spontaneous and observed way, there could be upwards of 50-100 images. This really differs with each shoot, and whether you wanted me to select the best for you, or if you’d prefer to see everything.

How soon will I be able to see my photos?

I usually have your images online and in your private gallery, within 2-4 days, and they’ll be online for 4 weeks. From here, you can follow the instructions to download your images.

Can I have my pictures in black and white?

Sometimes a picture looks better in black and white. So yes, just ask I can send you back and white versions of those images.

Can you make prints and frame my photographs?

Yes, there are some great print and framing options for you to choose from. Choosing exactly what you want can be tricky, but I have plenty of experience with this, so I’ll be glad to help you decide.

How long have you been a photographer?

Since 2004. In another life, I was off seeing the world as a Marine Seismic Survey Engineer. I started that work in 2003, and soon picked up a camera as a way to keep a diary of my adventures. Gradually I became more serious about photography. Between 2006 and 2008 I photographed my work at sea, and the crew I was a part of, culminating in Time For Time which looks at the reality of spending half your life at sea, working and waiting for the other half of life to resume when you step back onto dryland. I enjoyed making that project so much more than my actual job that I resigned to study photography full time. So, from 2008-2011 I was a student on the internationally renowned BA Documentary Photography course at USW. I haven’t looked back….
